VOLUNTOURISM SCALES NEW HEIGHTS IN THE FAROE ISLANDS

Forecast: “Whilst voluntourism is not a new trend, The Faroe Islands have launched a brand-new project for their Closed for Maintenance initiative in 2023. Recognised for several awards, including Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel’, this scheme is entering its fourth year and, next year, volunteers will be asked to scale mountains in this harsh but stunning environment.

“Voluntourists worldwide will be called upon to roll up their sleeves to help preserve the natural environment across the 18 volcanic islands. This is a true example of how tourism can contribute to the regenerative development of a destination. Both Faroe Islanders and international visitors who are eager to make a difference and give back by working can help pave the way for a sustainable future.”

Sample Trip: ‘Closed for Maintenance’ will take place from 20-22 April 2023. This time, volunteers will scale new heights by helping to maintain Slættaratindur, the Faroes’ highest mountain. In 2023, the initiative will involve two days of maintenance of the path up the mountain, creating alternative and safer routes, together with marking paths with wayfinding posts, and repairing paths that have eroded due to the number of visitors.

At the end of the project, all volunteers (100 people, chosen at random) will enjoy a celebratory evening, with a meal of typical Faroese food and local beer, and a traditional folk dance.
