The Grand Hotel Eastbourne welcomes new Head Chef, Alex Burtenshaw, to the Mirabelle
Alex joins from the Port Hotel in Eastbourne, and in his 14-year career has held Sous Chef and Head Chef positions at a number of award-winning hotel restaurants across the south coast, including the Brighton Harbour Hotel & Spa, The Restaurant at Drakes Hotel in Brighton, and the Hotel Du Vin in Brighton.
The Mirabelle Restaurant – one of two at The Grand Hotel – has gained an exceptional reputation for its quality dining menus and has won multiple plaudits and awards, including being named in the top 50 best restaurants in the UK in the Independent, and featuring regularly in The Good Food Guide. Serving an exquisite modern European menu of seasonal specialities featuring local Sussex and Kent produce, complemented by an expertly-curated wine list, featuring many local Sussex wines, the restaurant is one of the finest in Eastbourne and, indeed, along the south coast.
Alex brings to the Mirabelle his signature style of classic British cuisine with a modern European twist, taking influence from dishes all over the world and adding his own unique spin. His inspiration came from childhood, seeing his father watching stalwart chefs such as Keith Floyd and Rick Stein on the television, and then catching the food and travel bug.
"I’m delighted to be joining this iconic seaside hotel, which has been serving exceptional cuisine to the residents of Eastbourne, plus visitors from around the world, since 1875. It has a distinguished history as one of the finest hotels on the south coast, having hosted world-famous musicians and thespians over many decades, and even hosting BBC Radio programmes live every week in the 1920s and 30s. I’m simply thrilled to join this historic British institution."
"I am also excited to be championing some of the excellent local suppliers we have on our doorstep, from sustainably- sourced fish from Fish MCB Newhaven, to award-winning goats’ cheese from Nut Knowle Farm, as well as excellent English Sparkling Wine from the Bolney Wine Estate, along with much, much more." Alex Burtenshaw, Head Chef
Alex’s first mission has been to launch the brand-new lunchtime menu at the Mirabelle – a selection of exquisite courses featuring local Sussex fish, seafood, game and vegetables – keenly priced at £25 for two courses, or £30 for three courses. Dishes include Cured Chalk Stream Trout with Lime Caviar, Venison Fillet with Ragu of Braised Haunch, and Honey Cake with Blackberry Compote.Alex will also oversee a series of special events in 2024 and 2025, including a Best of Sussex Dinner featuring excellent local cheeses, fish and meats, paired with Sussex wines.
We are thrilled to welcome Alex to The Grand, bringing his wealth of experience and creativity to our kitchen, where he will be a pivotal part of the team. His passion for championing the fantastic and abundant produce available in Sussex will be a huge asset to our already-excellent dining options Jonathan Webley, General Manager at The Grand Eastbourne
The Grand Hotel, one of the only five-star seafront hotels in the UK, is affectionately known by locals as The White Palace, and is superbly located right on the town’s Victorian promenade, just steps from the sea. The hotel has hosted many famous names over the years, including Sir Ernest Shackleton, Charlie Chaplin, classical composers Debussy and Elgar (after whom two suites are named) and, more recently, Dame Helen Mirren.
The hotel features 152 bedrooms and suites, all luxuriously furnished, many with sweeping sea views, balconies, or private patios, while others have adjoining rooms which work very well for family stays. The hotel boasts two excellent restaurants – The Mirabelle and The Garden Restaurant – plus a stylish cocktail bar and elegant lounge areas in which to enjoy a light lunch or Afternoon Tea. There is also a Health Club – along with indoor and outdoor pools – (the latter is open May – September), plus a range of treatment rooms.
