 During the summer months, the historic city of Cambridge is alive with al fresco concerts, performances and festivals. Make the most of summer days in the city’s beautiful open spaces and then stay within easy reach at Hotel Felix – a stylish Victorian villa set in three acres of gardens.

Cambridge Shakespeare Festival (13 July-29 August)

An eight-week festival of Elizabethan drama performed in the idyllic settings of Cambridge University’s private gardens; the audience can picnic on a summer’s evening before enjoying theatre at its best. This year’s programme includes Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Tickets cost from £28 pp.

Cambridge Comedy Festival (15-20 July)

The annual week-long Cambridge Comedy Festival is renowned for showcasing some of the world’s finest stand-up comedians and is fast becoming a regular calling point for top names honing their shows before taking them to the famous Edinburgh Fringe in August. Tickets cost from £11 pp.

Cambridge Summer Music Festival (17 July-1 August)

This festival of classical music offers outstanding musical performances in college chapels, cobbled courtyards and the art-bedecked galleries of the Fitzwilliam Museum. This year’s line-up includes the Deutsche Philharmonic Orchester, Sir Willard White and Patricia Bardon, the Wihan and Doric String Quartets, Brett Dean and Melvyn Tan. The outdoor concerts in the Cambridge Botanic Garden and Wandlebury Country Park are a firm favourite! Tickets cost from £10 pp.

Take a punt through history (24 July-6 September)

What could be more sublime than taking a punt along a scenic stretch of the River Cam on a sunny day? A quintessential Cambridge experience, punting on the waterways affords some of the best views of the historic city and its iconic university buildings. Hotel Felix offers a ‘Messing about on the River’ package from £180 per room/£90 pp (two sharing) including a guided punting tour, full English breakfast, three-course dinner, parking and WiFi.

Cambridge Folk Festival (30 July-2 August)

An eclectic range of performers has been announced for what is one of the longest established and most prestigious folk festivals in the world. International chart-topper Passenger will appear, as well as folk/punk singer songwriter Frank Turner. Tickets cost from £25.50 pp.

Movies on the Meadows (29 & 30 August)

Spend a balmy evening watching a film under the stars in a picturesque setting on the banks of the River Cam at Grantchester Meadows. The open-air cinema will screen six films over two evenings on giant inflatable screens.

Cambridge Film Festival (3-13 September)

Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2015, this popular film festival features a diverse programme of screenings, premieres and special events at the Arts Picturehouse and surrounding historic locations. Don’t miss ‘Cinema on the River’ – cinemagoers watch films while drifting in punts down the River Cam through Grantchester and Trumpington meadows.
