Robin Pope Safaris celebrates 25th anniversary of walking safaris in Zambia
This July the safari experts at Robin Pope Safaris will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its renowned mobile walking trips in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park – the birthplace of walking safaris.
Robin Pope Safaris led its first mobile walking safari back in 1990 and this quickly became known as the ultimate wilderness experience in the South Luangwa – Zambia’s premier big game park.
In the company of a highly-experienced guide, guests strike out on foot for an exclusive five-night expedition into the epic expanse of the Luangwa Valley.
After spending a night at Nkwali Camp on the banks of the Luangwa River, travellers (in a group of no more than six people) head out into more remote parts of the savannah to begin the journey along the banks of the Mupamadzi River (a major tributary of the Luangwa).
A walking safari is an exceptional experience; with no 4WD vehicle to separate you from the wilderness, every sight, sound and smell is powerfully intensified. Your guide leads you through the bush where you have the chance to spot elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe and hippo, plus over 450 bird species. You’re taught to read the language of wild animals, and to identify animals’ behaviour.
Covering a distance of around 10km each day, guests sleep in large walk-in tents with proper bedding, and the camp has a shower under a tree and a bush loo. Delicious meals are served beneath the open sky and guests move campsite every other day. A final night at either Nsefu or Tena Tena (both intimate bushcamps in the isolated Nsefu Sector of the park) completes the safari.
The seven-night trips are available between June and October and cost from £2,996 pp (based on two sharing) including four or five nights’ mobile walking safari, topped and tailed by one night at Nkwali Camp and two nights at either Nsefu or Tena Tena Camp, safari activities with expert guides, all meals, transfers and park fees. Flights extra. Each camp is set up in advance by the Robin Pope Safaris team and luggage is transferred for guests.
