Discover Poldark’s Cornwall with Aspects Holidays

Poldark will be back on screen this autumn (from 4 September), with ten brand-new episodes. The popular BBC drama, starring Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark, showcases Cornwall’s stunning scenery and rich mining heritage. This autumn, why not fly to Cornwall after the summer crowds have subsided and explore some of the soul-stirring settings with specialist cottage purveyor Aspects Holidays?

THE LOCATION: PICTURESQUE PORTHGWARRA

PORTHGWARRAThis delightful former fishing cove in the far western corner of Cornwall is used as the setting for Nampara Cove in Poldark. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and rock pooling, and the secluded sandy beach is surrounded by scenic South West Coast Path walks, fields of wildflowers and far-reaching sea views. From the iconic Minack Theatre in Porthcurno and Logan’s Rock near Treen to Sennen’s surfing beaches and the pretty harbour villages of Lamorna and Mousehole, the area is awash with things to see and do.

THE COTTAGE:

Stay at Tresillion (sleeps six), a superb barn conversion accessible from Porthgwarra via a short, but suitably rugged, cliff-top walk. The barn offers spacious, split-level accommodation, three bedrooms and a garden with coastal views. Artwork and books displayed throughout the property reflect a Cornish coastal theme. A week’s stay this autumn costs from £89 pp (£532 total). Call Aspects Holidays on 01736 754242 (aspects-holidays.co.uk).

THE LOCATION: BOTALLACK TO LEVENT COASTAL PATH

Levant-mineThe scenic stretch of coastline linking Botallack and Levant continues to be a popular location owing to its rich mining heritage. The restored engine houses at Levant Mine, near St Just, play the role of the fictional Tressiders Rolling Mill, while Owles & Crowns, near Botallack, stars as Ross Poldark’s Wheal Leisure. Walks along the coast take you to these historic locations and to some seriously pretty chocolate-box villages and hamlets. Pick a base in Pendeen, St Just, St Buryan or Cape Cornwall and embark upon your search for Captain Ross amidst granite cairns and gorse-strewn Cornish hedgerows.

THE COTTAGE:
Stay at Pleasant Cottage (sleeps five) in the heart of St Just, a traditional Cornish village with a rich history of mining, fishing and farming. This recently-refurbished cosy cottage has a wood burner, pretty garden and sweeping rural views (and sea views on clear days, too). A week’s stay this autumn costs from £81 pp (£403 total). Call Aspects Holidays on 01736 754242 (aspects-holidays.co.uk).

THE LOCATION: CHURCH COVE, GUNWALLOE (THE LIZARD)

ChurchCoveGunwalloeYou’ll recognise the sandy beach at Church Cove, Gunwalloe, on The Lizard peninsula – the country’s most southern tip – as the setting for Aidan Turner’s dramatic late-night shipwreck scene. Today, the rolling countryside, crystalline coves and gorgeous silken sands hide Church Cove’s shipwreck history. Neighbouring Dollar Cove has a similar past, named after the silver coins that washed ashore when ships met their fate on the rocks.

THE COTTAGE:
Stay at Condurrow Cottage (sleeps six), a characterful 17th century Cornish cottage close to the Helford River, the estuary nestled between Falmouth and the Lizard Peninsula. This classic country cottage is the perfect base from which to explore a stunning corner of Cornwall, with its large private gardens backing on to fields and woodland, three spacious bedrooms, beamed ceilings and a roaring open fire. A week’s stay this autumn costs from £95 pp (£472 total). Call Aspects Holidays on 01736 754242 (aspects-holidays.co.uk).
