New for 2027: Campania Tour with Peter Sommer Travels

Now, following repeated requests from loyal travellers, Peter Sommer Travels is thrilled to introduce its new, long-in-the-making, tour: Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum: Exploring the Wonders of Campania.

Campania hardly requires an introduction. Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Naples – these are names that have echoed through books, films and imaginations for generations. Yet familiarity is no preparation for standing in these places yourself and discovering how vividly the ancient world survives beneath the shadow of the volcano that both destroyed it, and preserved it.

This richly layered journey goes far beyond the headline sites. Begin among the soaring Greek temples of Paestum, where Magna Graecia first took root on Italian soil. Explore Herculaneum, astonishingly intimate in its preservation, where timber furniture, painted walls and everyday objects seem abandoned only yesterday. Visit aristocratic villas at Oplontis and Stabiae, where dazzling frescoes reveal the tastes and ambitions of Rome’s wealthiest families. Then comes Pompeii itself: a day immersed in archaeology’s most celebrated city, from grand forums and bathhouses to private homes, gardens and bustling streets, frozen in time.

Along the way, the story widens to encompass the fertile countryside, the luxury resorts of Baiae and Pozzuoli – and, finally, Naples’ extraordinary Archaeological Museum, home to many of the masterpieces recovered from the Vesuvian cities.

Guiding the tour is Paul Beston, an ancient historian, lecturer and broadcaster whose infectious enthusiasm brings the ancient Mediterranean to life. Having taught at King’s College London and advised on historical television productions, he combines deep expertise with an engaging, accessible style that transforms remarkable sites into unforgettable experiences.

With two departures in 2027 – 16 April and 8 October – the new eight-day tour costs from £3,995 pp (two sharing), including seven nights’ accommodation, most meals (except one lunch and three dinners), wine with dinner, return airport transfers, travel by private minibus, all entrance fees, and the services of your expert tour leaders throughout the trip. Single supplement £765.
