New for 2019 from Expert Africa

Zig-zagging over the Great Ruaha River in a hot air balloon and luxury camps aplenty: Safari specialist Expert Africa shares some exciting new developments taking place in southern Africa over the coming months…

Zambia
A new camp, Takwela, is due to open in North Luangwa National Park in July 2019. It will be the first camp to offer game drives in the region, making this diverse site accessible for the first time to those who prefer to travel in a safari vehicle. The camp will be aimed at visitors seeking an authentic experience in remote wilderness, with simple rooms constructed at the beginning of each season and meals cooked over an open fire. Group activities will provide an exciting, sociable safari experience.

Zimbabwe
Nyamatusi, a new camp in Mana Pools National Park, is expected to open in 2019. Set to be one of the most luxurious camps in the region, the camp will provide an intimate experience with a small collection of just six luxury tents, each beautifully decorated and offering exquisite views of the Zambezi river.

Nyamatusi has a special offer: if you book before the end of the year you can stay there for the same price as their Zambezi Expeditions Camp in the same park (a saving of about £175 pp per night).

Mana Pools is one of the most isolated and wildlife-rich areas in Zimbabwe, making a strong case for its inclusion in the upcoming David Attenborough series Dynasties, due for broadcast in late 2018. The programme will include a significant feature on the wild dogs present in the park and is sure to garner interest in the region going into the New Year and beyond.

Tanzania
Hot air balloon flights are an exciting new addition in Ruaha National Park, offering visitors the chance to spot game from above while enjoying unbeatable views of this incredibly remote area. Taking off at sunrise, groups will enjoy a one-hour flight over the Great Ruaha River, spotting a wealth of wildlife before being escorted into the bush for a delicious champagne breakfast.

Rwanda
The new Magashi camp is expected to open in Akagera National Park in mid-December 2018, creating a high-end loop around Rwanda. Located in the far north of the park, the camp will consist of just six luxury tents, boasting panoramic views over Lake Rwanyakazinga. Since the recent reintroduction of black rhino into the area, Akagera is now a ‘big five’ national park and activities such as guided walks and boating safaris will allow visitors to make the most of the incredibly diverse wildlife in the region.

Namibia
A new multi-day trek through the Grootberg Massive is due to begin operating in late 2018. The Etendeka walking trail will guide visitors through the hills of one of Namibia’s most remote and untouched wilderness areas over two to three days, staying overnight at back-to-basics, open-air camps which offer unbeatable opportunities for stargazing.
