New Wild Hokkaido (self-guided) – the opening of a new shinkansen line linking Honshu to Hokkaido in the spring will shine a light on this rural northern island, traditionally popular with skiers. Visit in the summer for eagles, whales and dolphins on the Shiretoko Peninsula, canoeing and fishing on Lake Kussharo, hiking up Mt Asahi, the hot spring town of Toya Onsen, and the lavender-filled fields of Biei.

Japan Arts Trail (self-guided) – this trip includes the third Setouchi Triennale Arts Festival, which takes place three times during 2016 (20 March-17 April, 18 July-4 September and 8 October-6 November) across the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and features Japanese and international artists’ works on beaches, in the mountains, in rice paddies and villages. Plus, visit Japan’s best galleries, sculpture parks, artisan workshops and gardens in various cities.

New Diving Japan (small group tour) – head 400km south of Okinawa and dive off the islands of Yonaguni, Ishigaki and Akajima. Explore an underwater ancient ‘lost city’, thought to be 10,000 years old, visit beautiful Ishigaki, with over 300 different types of coral off its shores, and Akajima to see a stunning kaleidoscope of marine life. Hammerhead sharks, manta rays, sea snakes, dog tooth tuna and whale shark are to be seen in these waters.

Rural Japan Explorer (small group tour) – a trip encompassing the most beautiful coastal gems of the main island of Honshu, the culture of Kyoto, and the cities of Mitsue and Hiroshima.
