HOSHINOYA Bali launches “Rantang Sari”, a refined culinary journey inspired by Balinese tradition and Japanese artistry, ahead of the Ubud Food Festival.

HOSHINOYA Bali, the serene luxury retreat nestled in the lush jungle of Ubud, Bali, introduces a new signature dining experience, Rantang Sari – a sophisticated reimagining of Indonesia’s traditional multi-tiered lunch box. Roughly translated as “Essence of the tiffin”, it blends the vibrant tastes of Balinese cuisine with the elegance of Japanese culinary craftsmanship, offering guests to savour the true “Sari,” or refined essence, of the island’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Served at the resort’s treetop Café Gazebo, Rantang Sari is designed as an elevated picnic-style lunch experience. Guests are invited to unwind in private gazebos set amidst a tropical canopy, where dappled sunlight, cool valley breezes, and the gentle rhythm of the Pakerisan River create an atmosphere of complete tranquillity.

This immersive setting enhances a dining experience rooted in the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which celebrates the harmonious relationship between people, nature, and the divine. Each tier of the beautifully crafted rantangreflects this philosophy through thoughtful storytelling and exquisite flavours:

  • Top Tier: Harmony with Nature – The “Rujak” Salad
A refreshing Balinese fruit salad featuring young mango, papaya, and pineapple, elevated with a tangy palm sugar and chili glaze. This vibrant dish captures the island’s natural abundance and tropical vitality.
  • Middle Tier: Harmony with People – Temari Sushi Fusion
A creative fusion of cultures expressed through five artisanal temari sushi spheres. Featuring Indonesian staples such as nasi goreng and nasi kuning with duck, alongside sushi rice paired with fresh snapper and prawn, this tier symbolises cultural connection and culinary innovation.
  • Bottom Tier: Harmony with the Divine – Artisanal Sweets
Inspired by spiritual devotion, this tier presents handcrafted wagashi (nerikiri), delicately shaped into Balinese flowers. These edible artworks pay homage to daily offerings made in gratitude to the divine.

It started in 2015 and has grown into a big international event that attracts chefs, food lovers, and culinary experts from all over the world. Ubud is surrounded by rice fields and farms, so the whole festival feels connected to the land.

Part street-food fair, part culinary conference, and part cultural festival, there is a huge food market with dozens of stalls, live cooking demos by well-known chefs, talks & panels about food culture, sustainability, farming, etc and masterclasses & workshops where you can actually learn to cook.
