NEW PROPERTIES 

Scotland 

Boutique Retreats’ first foray into Scotland takes the form of two Scandi-style sister properties: Shore Cottage and Hill Cottage (each sleeps two) – glorious retreats, tucked away in Durness, North Sunderland, on the edge of a sparkling sea loch, Eriboll. The setting is almost otherworldly: through floor-to-ceiling windows, Ben Hope (946 m) – the most northerly of the Munros – looms in the distance between bruised skies and the orange glow of the open fire. Each curved cottage has underfloor heating, outdoor bath for two, a seven-foot steel and leather bed, a state-of-the-art home entertainment system (with Sky package) and a walk-in rain shower. Cape Wrath, with its towering cliffs, golden beaches, moorland and mountains, begs to be explored.

Owing to these properties’ popularity, availability is limited to December only. A three-night weekend stay in December costs from £630 pp (£1,260 total). Up to two dogs are welcome (£30 each extra).

Cornwall 

The Shippen (sleeps six), near Padstow, is a beautifully converted, single-storey barn set in 75 acres of farmland. For families or couples keen to explore the unspoilt stretches of Cornwall’s north coast, it’s hard to imagine a more peaceful or stylish base. With slate floors, underfloor heating, soothing
tones and fascinating artwork throughout, plus a roaring wood-burner, an enormous flat screen television / DVD (with full Sky package) and Nespresso machine, it’s tempting to stay put. But Padstow, the small fishing port with a fabulous foodie reputation, will eventually lure you out, even if it’s just for lunch and a look at the boats.

Trevear Linhay (sleeps six), situated on the same farmland as The Shippen (above), is a very spacious, open-plan, two-storey barn conversion with exposed beams and a Cornish slate floor. Ideal for a family or for a group of friends, the living area has an impressive wood-burner, a soft leather corner sofa and all the entertainment mod-cons you could wish for. The duck-egg blue kitchen is particularly appealing: black granite worktops and every kitchen tool you can imagine make cooking here a dream.

Gilliflower (sleeps two), slap-bang between the north and south cmodernandmature@pa.press.netoasts of far-west Cornwall, makes both Mediterranean-esque St Ives and the blissfully laid-back village of Porthleven an easy drive in either direction. This converted 15^th century Grade II-listed granite barn has a gorgeous Magnolia tree outside its front door and its reversed interior layout (the living area is upstairs and the bedroom downstairs) is all decorated in soft creams and greens. The courtyard garden is a lovely spot for a sundowner on a balmy evening and, when the stars are out and you’re snuggled on the large, comfortable sofa inside, the wood-burner provides a welcome warmth and glow.
