Stay at the Parador de Córdoba – around a one hour 45 minute drive north of Málaga airport in the city of Córdoba – a hotel built amongst the ruins of the summer palace of the caliph Abdu’r-Raman I, who planted the first palm trees in Europe. The Parador is situated in a hilly area 3 km (ten minutes’ drive) from the city and so benefits from cooler air (Córdoba is a hot place to be in the summer). Enjoy outdoor dining on the terrace, stroll in the ample gardens surrounding the pool and take in panoramic views. There’s a wealth of fascinating sights to see in this ancient city, including the famous Mezquita-Catedral (built in the 10th century as a Mosque), La Ribera district with its cool cafés and bars, superb riverside restaurants and beautiful courtyard patios. Córdoba is a wonderful place to see a different side of Spain, and feels like a world away from the busy Costa del Sol.
A seven-night B&B stay costs from £781 pp (two sharing), including return flights from Exeter to Málaga with Ryanair and car hire.
