Our Stories

The UK’s leading independent cottage holiday company, Classic Cottages, today launches its new Directory 2015 brochure of 549 coastal and country self-catering properties across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Somerset.

From beautifully-converted barns, magnificent manor houses, stylish apartments and thatched cottages to meadow huts or safari-style tents, Classic Cottages’ portfolio has somewhere to suit. Long stay or short break, rural or coastal, romantic or active, there are desirable homes-from-home sleeping from two to 20 people.

New and noteworthy properties for 2015 include:

The UK’s one and only truly zero-carbon holiday destination in Cornwall

The Emerald (five houses, sleeping between two and six) is an award-winning boutique collection of hi-spec, super-insulated cedar-clad houses set in a fabulously tranquil location near Falmouth. Not only has The Emerald achieved the highest possible grading (Code 6 status) for eco-efficiency, it is now a finalist in Visit Cornwall’s Oscars in the Sustainable Tourism category. Spread throughout five acres of mature woodland and beautifully-maintained grounds, there is an indoor heated swimming pool and gym, an outdoor tennis court and children’s play area, an orchard with chickens and ducks, and a solar farm which generates all the energy The Emerald needs. A week’s stay in one of the houses costs from £153 pp (£918 total).

Upside-down contemporary cottage in a traditional Cornish fishing village

Mears Cottage (sleeps four) in Coverack, South-West Cornwall, is a modishly-modernised 1970s property with mesmeric sea views. Through floor-to-ceiling windows, and from the outside deck upstairs, the sea stretches out before you, glistening. Whilst the property has a cosy, rustic feel, it has been kitted out with hi-spec features such as a Smeg fridge/freezer. There’s easy access to the coastal path below and the village of Coverack has a pretty harbour, a sandy beach and a friendly pub. A week’s stay costs from £117 pp (£468 total).

Countryside views to die for in Devon

Lower Chaddlehanger (sleeps nine), in Tavistock, is a group of three delightful cottages, located in rolling Devon farmland in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a mile from Dartmoor. They can be rented as single cottages or as a whole, perfect for a family gathering. All three cottages are decorated with real flair with use of designer fabrics and up-to-the minute fittings. Home-cooked meals can be ordered in advance, cycling or riding can be arranged and there’s even a ‘pillow menu’ to choose from! A week’s stay costs from £97 pp (£870 total).

Luxurious bolthole for two in Cornwall

The Tractor Shed (sleeps two) is a beautifully-designed private bolthole near to Polzeath, which provides comfort on all levels; it’s a place to curl up and read a book, a place where you can enjoy long lie-ins to recharge the batteries, and a place to take a dreamy soak in the gorgeous bath. Days can be spent using the communal outdoor swimming pool (available from May to October), plus hot tub, gym, private outside seating and barbecue area. It’s perfect for couples of all ages and especially perhaps for solo travellers, providing an ideal holiday base for exploring the shores of Polzeath, Rock and Padstow, and prompting gourmet delights, surfing and walking adventures. A week’s stay costs from £300 pp (£599 total).

Classic Cottages’ properties still available over Christmas:

Grandeur this Christmas – Cornwall for eight

Nancealverne House (sleeps eight) is a Grade II Listed 18th century manor outside Penzance, partly built with prize money from Nelson’s battle of the Nile, no less. With 14 acres of parkland to roam, and your own rowing boat for the lake, Christmas will never have felt this splendid. A week’s stay, arriving Saturday 20 December, costs £147 pp (£1,170 total).

Heavenly haven – Devon for eight

Mewstone View (sleeps eight) in Wembury is a super-sleek, sea-facing dwelling, minutes from Wembury beach, not far from Plymouth and Dartmoor. There is a wraparound deck at the back of the house, and the stylish living room has floor-to-ceiling glass doors, white leather sofas and a wood burner. A week’s stay, arriving Saturday 20 December, costs £155 pp (£1,233 total).

Stay scrumptious this Christmas – Somerset for six

Scrumpy Cottage (sleeps four), near Ilminster, is a refurbished period property with a fresh interior and a wood burner. In the village, Perry’s Cider Farm offers the freedom to taste as many award-winning ciders as you like and a shop brimming with exciting seasonal treats including jams, chutneys, Somerset cheeses and meats – perfect for your Christmas feast. The Jurassic Coast is close by: take your wellies and prepare to be uplifted. A week’s stay, arriving Saturday 20 December, costs £163 pp (£651 total).

Farm fun for all the family – Dorset for six

Sturthill Stable (sleeps six), near Bridport, is a new and extremely spacious barn conversion on a working farm, with the Jurassic Coast’s family-and-dog-friendly beaches close by. Accessed via your own little bridge, the cottage has a tennis court, a large lawn, a playroom and plenty of farm action. A stream runs past the front door, and the property features a farmhouse kitchen and a playroom. A week’s stay, arriving Saturday 20 December, costs £153 pp (£915 total).
