Burma Cycling Holiday: through the backstreets of Yangon

InsideBurma Tours has introduced a new half-day tour – on two wheels – of Burma’s colourful and photogenic former capital, Yangon. Veering away from the city’s main roads, explore the maze of alleys that surrounds the glittering Shwedagon Pagoda, and meet local vendors selling flowers, Buddha statuettes and monks’ robes. Pedal around the picturesque lake in Kandawgyi Park, and head into the countryside, following back roads to peaceful temples and mosques. Visit a rural community, take a break at a traditional tea shop, and cycle along the Yangon River.

Visible wherever you are in Yangon, the Shwedagon Pagoda was described by Rudyard Kipling during a visit in 1889 as the ‘winking wonder’, and has been in existence since the 11th century, when Yangon was founded. The city became an important trading port in the 18th century and, in 1852, the British moved their colonial capital there and renamed it Rangoon. The city remained the capital of Burma until independence, in 2005.

The guided cycling tour lasts around four hours and covers approximately 25 km. It can be booked as part of any fully tailored InsideBurma Tours itinerary.
