Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa

Travel PR is delighted to announce that it is now representing Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Bedford Lodge suite

Originally built as a hunting lodge for the sixth Duke of Bedford in the 18th century, four AA Red Star Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa sits in three acres of secluded, landscaped gardens adjacent to Newmarket’s famous paddocks and horse-racing training stables.

The privately-owned hotel, which is a member of the prestigious Pride of Britain Hotels collection, features 80 luxuriously appointed bedrooms, including 21 super-king-sized rooms. There is also a luxury ‘Mews’ – a separate property sitting adjacent to the main hotel, enjoying views over the neighbouring famous trainer’s yard, with three bedrooms (an executive suite, and two superior rooms) plus a private dining area in which guests can enjoy private dining arranged by the hotel’s kitchens, offering supreme privacy and comfort for a small group of family and friends or business colleagues, along with all the benefits of the hotel.

Squires restaurant Bedford Lodge

The hotel boasts two excellent dining options, overseen by newly-appointed Executive Head Chef Lee Cooper, who joined the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa team in October 2021. Squires Restaurant, recently awarded two AA rosettes for its excellent standards of cuisine and the quality of its ingredients, is open both to residents and non-residents. Squires Restaurant is renowned for reinventing delicious seasonal classics, using the finest meat, game, shellfish and cheese sourced within a 50-mile radius, significantly reducing the distance from field to fork and also supporting local farmers and other key suppliers. The Roxana Bar serves lighter meals and afternoon teas in a cosy setting, with a roaring log fire to savour in wintertime and a beautiful terrace overlooking the gardens to enjoy in the summer.

The hotel’s gardens are a delight to wander around, with manicured formal lawns, ten varieties of well-established roses in the gardens around the front of the hotel, plus a variety of beautiful blooms – including daffodils, tulips, crocuses and hyacinths – during spring.  In the summer, the gardens are awash with colour, with impressive hanging baskets and seasonal tubs adorning the building and its many terraces, courtesy of the hotel’s in-house gardening team.

Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa’s Health & Fitness Club provides state-of-the-art gym facilities plus a 15m swimming pool (and separate Jacuzzi) to both guests and members. The hotel is also home to an extremely indulgent spa, adjacent to the hotel; it has been awarded a prestigious five-bubble rating by the Good Spa Guide. Facilities include a glass-walled hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna, experiential showers, ten treatment rooms, a lounge and a rooftop terrace (complete with hot tub).  Spa time and treatments should be reserved in advance.

Fully licensed for civil ceremonies, and featuring three self-contained banqueting suites accommodating up to 150 guests – not to mention a private garden, perfect for photography – the hotel is an idyllic setting for weddings, with an elegant 17th century white stucco venue and stunning rose gardens providing the ultimate in romantic backdrops. The hotel is also one of the leading venues in the region for conferences, corporate events and meetings, with seven stylish and comfortable dedicated conference and event rooms.  Again, a private garden is perfect for mingling, plus fun and fresh air, during meeting breaks.

Bedford Lodge gardens

With a vibrant history spanning over 200 years, the hotel’s past is peopled with interesting and hugely influential characters.  From Sir Joseph Hawley, a prolific racehorse owner, and the notorious George Alexander Baird, a lover of gambling, womanising and hard drinking (whose memory lives on in the name of the award-winning Squires Restaurant), to Lord Beaverbrook, founder of the Sunday Express and known as the first baron of Fleet Street, there were some fascinating characters involved. Perhaps most notable of all was Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford (wife of the 7th Duke), who is credited with creating the concept of Afternoon Tea when she visited the Duke of Rutland at Belvoir Castle in the mid-1840s.  Bedford Lodge naturally serves an exquisite Afternoon Tea daily in her memory.

An overnight stay is from £155 per room (two sharing a king-sized bedroom), including full English breakfast and use of the Health & Fitness Club with its 15m indoor pool plus Jacuzzi. Bedford Lodge Hotel was originally a Georgian hunting lodge, built for the 6th Duke of Bedford. The much-loved concept of Afternoon Tea was created, in 1845, by the wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford. The famous tradition continues today, and is, naturally, a speciality at Bedford Lodge Hotel. Nestled in three secluded acres of rose gardens, close to both world-class Newmarket racecourses, the hotel also offers easy access to charming Suffolk countryside, Tudor-era Lavenham, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds & Ely’s stunning mediaeval cathedral.

*Located adjacent to the hotel, The Spa is open from Wednesday to Sunday; there is an additional charge to enjoy its excellent facilities. The spa can be prebooked by contacting spareservations@bedfordlodgehotel.co.uk or by calling 01638 676 130.
