Celebrate Easter the Greek way too

Easter feasts and fun in the south Peloponnese – Greece from £567 pp with Sunvil Holidays

This year, Greek Easter is one week after ours (on Sunday 12th April), so canny holidaymakers can celebrate the occasion twice.

In Greece, Easter is a major, world-renowned festival that outshines Christmas and sees entire towns and villages turn out for fireworks, feasting and gregarious religious processions.

Located in the pretty seaside resort of Gialova in the south Peloponnese, the family-run Villa Zoe Hotel and Apartments offer a wonderful insight to the festivities and encourage guests to join in the celebrations. On Good Friday, the nearby church holds a candle-lit procession in the evening and, on Holy Saturday, there’s an atmospheric evening mass, which starts in darkness and ends in a blaze of light and fireworks.

On Easter Sunday, guests are offered a special feast. Traditional delicacies – painted eggs and tsoureki (a sweet Easter bread) are served at breakfast. A late (and long) lunch follows, featuring mouth-watering spit-roast lamb from the hotel’s very own farm.

The hotel and apartments sit in a peaceful spot, just steps away from the long sandy beach and only 1 km from the edge of a nature reserve known for its birdlife and unique species of chameleon.

Seven nights’ B&B at the Villa Zoe Hotel costs from £567 pp (two sharing), including Easter Sunday Feast, return flights (Gatwick) and transfers. Seven nights’ self-catering at the Villa Zoe Apartments costs from £671 pp (two sharing a Studio), including Easter Sunday Feast, return flights (Gatwick) and transfers.
